1. Position first, then talk documents: intended use and pressure class (mmHg)

Graduated vs uniform compression: different claims, different evidence

2. What a "usable" test report looks like

"The factory says it has tests" is not a document you can file. A usable report is one you can match to a specific product, for a specific claim, produced by a named lab on a stated date.

The basic elements of a usable report

Product identification: The report must name your product, not a generic category — SKU / model / product name matches your order
Construction and materials: Zippered vs non-zippered, knit structure, fiber content all affect results — Report describes the same build you are buying
Size / size range tested: Pressure and fit depend on size; one size does not cover the range — The tested size matches the sizes you will sell
Test method or standard cited: A number without a method is not a result — A defined method is named, not just "in-house test"
Testing laboratory and location: Who produced the data, and where — A named lab; note whether it is in-house or third-party
Date of test: Recency relative to your production and design — Dated, and still valid for your current construction
Result / measured values: You need the actual data, not a pass/fail word — Measured values or clear pass/fail against a stated limit
Sample identity: Ties the paper to the exact item tested — Sample ID or photo linking report to product

Pressure / gradient measurement and fabric performance are two different reports

Do not use one for the other. A pressure or gradient measurement report supports a compression claim. Fabric performance testing (for example stretch and recovery, dimensional stability, pilling, colorfastness, or composition) supports material and durability claims. Ask, for each document, which claim is this report meant to support? If the supplier cannot answer that, the report was not written for your purpose.

Red flags: reports that will not protect you

Undated, or dated so long ago it no longer reflects your construction.
Covers a different construction, a different yarn, or a size you do not sell.
No laboratory named, or an unnamed "internal lab" with no method.
No test method stated — just a number or a check mark.
A certificate-style page with no underlying test data.
A report that names a competitor's product or a generic category.

3. The document set an importer should be able to file

Think in three layers. Each layer answers a different question, and a document from one layer does not substitute for another.

Product layer — composition, care, origin, label content

Material composition statement (the fiber content as it will appear on the label), care and wash instructions, a country-of-origin statement plus how origin is marked on product and carton, and the full label content — brand, size, fiber, care, origin. Confirm any market-specific labelling requirements for your destination before artwork is finalised.

Performance layer — test reports tied to the claims you will make

Whatever you print or claim needs a report behind it: pressure and gradient measurement for compression claims, fabric performance for material claims. If you position the product for a therapeutic or medical use, additional pathway documents may apply, and those are exactly the items you must confirm against the current rules rather than assume.

Quality and shipment layer — inspection, batch traceability

Pre-shipment inspection reports, in-process quality checks, a batch or lot identification convention, and a packaging check. Declaration: A statement of conformity by a responsible party — Not test data; it asserts compliance rather than proving it

4. Questions to verify a factory's compliance claims

Ask for documents, not adjectives

"We have certification," "we are FDA approved," and "our socks are CE" are adjectives, not evidence. Ask for the specific document, the issuer, the date, and the scope it covers. Ask which certificates are already held and which would be obtained through a third party on request — and get the answer in writing. Check the scope: does it cover your product, size and construction?

A certificate for a different product line, or a report for a different size, does not cover your SKU. Ask the supplier to complete a short cross-reference: for each document, which of your products, sizes and claims does it cover? If a document cannot be tied to your item, it does not belong in your file.

Build an evidence file per SKU, and reuse it

Keep one folder per SKU containing the documents, their dates, and a note of which claim each one supports. On a reorder or a new listing, reuse the file — unless the yarn, construction or factory changes, in which case the evidence needs to be refreshed. Under 20: Often marketed for general wellness, comfort, travel or everyday support — What claim does the packaging make, and which report backs it?
20–30: Frequently the range where products start to be positioned as therapeutic or medical — Which pathway is claimed, and which documents go with it?
30–40: Often associated with therapeutic or medical positioning, sometimes with higher-level documentation — Does a premarket submission apply, and who holds the documents?
Above 40: Higher-pressure products may attract more scrutiny — confirm which pathway applies — What is the full document chain, and are required submissions in place?
