First, know what you are actually sourcing
Three models are often mixed up, and suppliers use the terms loosely.
Private label means you pick an existing product from a catalog and put your brand on it. It is fast, but you inherit the supplier's design and sizing. OEM means you bring your own specification and the supplier manufactures to it. ODM means you bring an idea or a reference product and the supplier develops the construction for you.
Most brands start with a reference product in mind and end up somewhere between ODM and OEM. That is fine. The important thing is to be explicit about which model you expect in the first conversation, because it changes the documentation, sampling, and pricing you will be offered.
Compression socks are a functional product, not a fashion item. The buyer is buying a stated effect — pressure, gradient, fit — so "make it like this sample" is not a complete requirement. You need numbers.
Write the spec first: the parameters that matter
Before contacting any factory, decide as much as you can about each parameter below. Every one is something a competent manufacturer can discuss, and a supplier who waves these off is a warning sign.

Features — the differentiators your customers will see. Consider a zipper entry, anti-slip band, toe style, cushioning, and sock height.
Branding and packaging — your shelf identity. Decide label type and placement, logo printing, retail packaging, polybag, and carton marking.
Documentation — the proof you can stand behind. Plan for material specs, test reports, composition, and wash-care labels.

Vet the supplier on process and evidence
A factory website can look identical to another factory website. What separates suppliers is the process behind sampling, quality control, and documentation. Ask each shortlisted supplier the following questions.
How does sampling actually work? Who programs the knit, how many rounds are typical, and how long does a custom sample take? A concrete answer beats a vague "fast."
